Communication is One of the reasons for my success as a Black Belt instructor over the last thirty years. I use memorable short analogies to teach Martial Arts philosophy. "Bits of knowledge" are pieces of information meant to create impact by stimulating the thoughts behind the movements that students are learning.
An example is the comment; "In reality, learning the Martial Arts has nothing to do with kicking or punching." This statement begs for further information from puzzled onlookers who wrongly think "kicking and punching" is exactly what Karate is. I add, "Karate is more like music, ballet or modern dance."
In summary, I explain that "training is really about learning to take command of your body-both physically and mentally. It is about learning to think first, and then make a move. Like a musician who does many things at once mentally and physically to make music. Like the dancer who creates a graceful movement by commanding the smallest body motion with exquisite muscle control. Learning the martial arts is about eye-hand and body coordination. It is about graceful movement, timing, and self-accomplishment. Like other "arts," you do not need a team and your success is entirely your own. The self-defense part is a bonus of training-not the purpose. Just like the musician who creates beautiful sounds and dancer whose movements defy the laws of nature."
With just a few words I have made my point and softened the visions of violence to parents and those uncomfortable with its relationship to the Martial Arts. I have also gained a little extra respect in the eyes of those who understand the importance of personal growth-and use Martial Arts training to achieve it.
